About the Metal

This piece is metal and open air. Electroforming grows metal onto a form until it has real thickness, so a spiral this thin holds its shape without a core underneath it, and the openwork stays crisp at the edges where a cast or coated piece would go blunt.

Because the spiral is open, light passes through it and lands on the table below as a second pattern. Gold throws a warm reflection, silver a hard bright one, and antique holds shadow in the turns of the spiral so the depth of the coil reads first.

How It’s Made

A round dosa tray built from one openwork spiral of electroformed metal, coiled from the center out to the rim and raised at the edge to give the piece a shallow wall. It measures 9" across and 1.75" high. There are no handles and no stone; the spiral is the whole structure, which is why it stays light for its size.
