About the Metal

The material here is metal alone, worked into an open lattice. Electroforming builds it up around the form a layer at a time, which is how a piece this openworked ends up strong enough to lift by one edge; a stamped version of the same lattice would be far more fragile.

An open pattern lives on its shadows. Light falls through the gaps and prints the lattice onto the table underneath, and the metal itself reads as two tones at once, bright along the raised strands and dark in the recesses. Gold gives the whole thing a warm cast, silver a cooler and more mineral one.

How It’s Made

The tray is an oblong dish with a shallow 0.5" wall, and its surface echoes the textures of ancient coral and fossil remains in an organic lattice. The pattern is formed first and the metal grown onto it in the electroforming bath until it has body of its own, then finished in gold or silver.
